If I have any advice to offer someone who is serious about freelance writing, it would be this: Get a job as an editor. Even if itís a part-time gig for a small local publication, do it! Iím convinced there is no better way to learn the business of writing than to sit on the other side of the desk. Working with other writers, helping them to produce stronger writing that is tailored for the publication you edit, forces you to view your own writing in a less myopic way. (more…)

Freelance writing is like dancing in a minefield. The more you dance, the more likely you are to lose a leg -- or worse.
In my years of freelancing, I've only been stiffed a few times by magazines either failing to launch or suddenly going under. That's why I typically work only with pay-on-acceptance publications and avoid pay-on-publication enterprises. Problem is, most fiction venues are the p-on-p types, and I love to write fiction. I like succinct, descriptive titles.
Consider, for example, Snakes on a Plane. Is there a better title for that movie? I canít think of one. Sure, it was a dumb movie (although anything with Samuel L. Jackson is worth a watch), but the title nails it.
This week, while researching "green" products for school facilities, I came across another succinct, descriptive title, this time for a company that produces enormous fans for large areas like school gyms. (more…)

Well, now I've gone and done it. I'm a dot.com.
Although I've been involved in Web development for ISM, my employer, since 1994, this is my first personal site. Like the plumber with leaky pipes at home, I guess I just never got around to "fixing" it.
So, here I am, starting a blog.
